2024 Faculty

Janene Batten is a senior research and education librarian in the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Yale University, CT, USA. She teaches the principles of EBP to nurses and librarians around the globe. She is also an expert in systematic review methodology, teaching and guiding teams through the process. Janene has been a tutor with the AEBPLI for the past 8 years. She recently completed her Doctor of Education degree.

Fiona Russell is Expert Searching and Consultancy Services Lead at Deakin University and develops and delivers services related to evidence syntheses and other complex searching. She recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Public Health. This will be her sixth year tutoring at the Institute, and she has previously hosted the Institute in Geelong over 2022 and 2023. Fiona was a participant of the Institute in 2012 and has always said that this was one of the best professional activities she has done as a librarian.

Fiona is a Co-Convenor for the 2024 Institute.


Blair Kelly is the Program Delivery Lead for the Scholarly Services team at Deakin University Library, where he supports a team of Scholarly Services Librarians and a Learning Designer to deliver expert library services to students, teachers, researchers and professional staff working in STEMM disciplines. Blair was a 2014 participant in the Institute and has been an Institute tutor since 2022. 

Mina Nichols-Boyd is a Clinical Librarian at Austin Health in Heidelberg, Victoria. She provides guidance on evidence-based practice and how to construct reproducible searches for systematic, scoping, and similar type reviews.

Kathryn Rough has been a tutor with the AEBPLI for 1 year and works 2 part-time jobs: Library Manager at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and Research Librarian at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). Kathryn is involved in expert searching across a range of databases and assists researchers with systematic reviews. 


Sarah Bateup is a student-focused health librarian with over 14 years of experience working in academic libraries. Sarah currently works as Faculty Librarian, Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University. Sarah supports staff and students with systematic searching and records management in evidence synthesis projects. In 2020-2021, Sarah led the Systematic Review Accelerator Polyglot's Phase 4 upgrade.

Sarah is the ALIA Group Treasurer for the 2024 Institute.

Jeph Ko is a Health Librarian at the University of South Australia, where his work is instrumental in utilising new technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and research. He strongly focuses on user experience (UX), communication, and instructional design, aiming to improve library services and resources. Jeph's commitment to professional development is evident in his attendance at AEBPLI 2023, underscoring his ongoing efforts to stay at the forefront of review methodology. With a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Photography from RMIT University, he combines creativity and technical skills into his health library role.

Mario Sos is a Liaison Librarian at Monash University. There he is aligned with the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences as well as the Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. His role involves providing consultations services to PhD candidates and the research community to aid in evidence synthesis.

2024 Co-Convenor

Connie Schardt retired in 2013 as the Associate Director for Research & Education at the Medical Center Library at Duke University. At the Medical Center Library, her main focus was to support the practice of Evidence-Based Medicine. Connie is one of the original coordinators of the Institute.

Suzanne Lewis is Library Services Manager at the Central Coast Local Health District in NSW, Australia. Suzanne’s professional interests include evidence-based practice in both librarianship and health and professional development for librarians. Suzanne is one of the original coordinators of the Institute.

Lisa Kruesi completed her Ph.D. at the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, in 2021.  She has experience working as a health library manager in top Australian research universities and at CSIRO. She was the Faculty Librarian, Health and Life Sciences at The University of Melbourne Library during 2017-2019. Lisa is one of the original coordinators of the Institute.

Sue Hutley is the General Manager, Library Customer Services at Bond University. With a long career in library management, she has always championed quality professional development opportunities for library staff.
Sue is the Co-Convenor of the 2024 Institute, providing overall organisation and coordination for the event. Sue is looking forward to welcoming participants to Brisbane in November 2024.
