It is with a very heavy heart that I write these few words to say to you, it is well with us, so fare thee well. You fought a good fight, so Rest in Peace with the Lord.

Mum, I started writing this letter to try to capture your essence and find one word that completely describes you. Phenomenal is the word I came up with. I have read some of your citations and it is amazing what you were able to accomplish in your life. You never got a Secondary School education but somehow you made such an impact nationally and internationally in the business and NGO worlds, all the while raising the five of us singlehandedly. Phenomenal is indeed who you are.

I have chosen to play your favourite Jim Reeves “We Thank Thee” album for you today because growing up, I remember you playing it practically all-day Sundays and joyfully singing along to it. Mum, you were always thanking God for one thing or another. You always had a very grateful heart and you were blessed by it. You, in turn, paid it forward and touched many lives in all you did. Just look at all the people here today and the many tributes we received. It is a true testament to your giving spirit. It says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In All Things, Give Thanks.”

You taught us to always take the high road in all things. To always look at the bigger picture, search for the common good, and to do things from a place of love. One of your favourite sayings was always “When GOD is already fighting your battles for you, all you need to do is to leave it in His hands” I will be forever grateful to you for instilling in us such a strong faith and trust in GOD.

Mum, I also remember the fun times. You loved to dance and have a good time. You had an unbelievable zest for life and loved a good laugh. I remember the jokes we shared. I still get a good laugh about the time you nearly got yourself arrested by the police. It was routine police stop but you thought it was the usual “Madam, give us something” stops. You would usually blow them off and take off, but this time they chased you. You told me how you used your James Bond evasive moves to lose them, and then went and hid in the late Major Courage Quashigah’s house. You always finished the story with “I gave them hell. They don’t know who they messed with. I come from a big, strong and accomplished family.”

You were a superb organizer and planner. One of your greatest fears was to find yourself in a totally vulnerable and helpless situation so you always had a backup for everything. We constantly assured you that we had your back and would do whatever we need to do to honour you, but you still saved and left enough to cover this celebration. My sisters and I are very grateful for it. I think however that you will be very proud to know we have managed to do this all of this without touching what you left. Yes, you taught us well!!!

Mum, you treated me more like the brother you never had and even called me Brother. You always had wise counsel for me. As a child, expressing the confidence you had in me, got me through those formative years. “Brother, me nyawo siaa” is a phrase I will always remember so Sister, I say “Ayekoo!!!!!”
