gender

Because ASSISTments doesn't record gender information, for those researchers who care about gender, we use a best effort method to infer student's gender based on the name that they have provided within their account.

We use the gender library, which matches first names to a gender, compiled by Jörg Michael and modified it for our own programmatic use. The library and original program can be found at https://github.com/cstuder/genderReader. This library consists of over 40,000 first names from several countries around the world.

The version we use is here: https://sites.google.com/site/assistmentsdata/how-to-interpret/gender/names.csv?attredirects=0&d=1.

"40,000 Names" has been published in "c't", a German computing magazine (reference below)
