Instructor: Dr. Evelyn Oka
Semester: Fall 2011
This was an amazing and especially applicable course for me to take, as it worked entirely inside the realm of motivation. How to motivate students, as well as different motivational problems that are commonly seen. From the class clowns that are trying to make up for perceived lack of ability, to the students that don't say a thing, in hopes that no one will realize they haven't a clue what's going on, to the student that seems like an over-achiever, but when you look closely, you realize she's taking the easiest classes to ensure success. We learned how to talk to students to prevent these problems (like saying, "I like how hard you worked on this to be successful," rather than, "wow, you're really good at this!"), as well as how to address them.
Work Sample: Behavioral Strategy
This was the plan for my motivational intervention that can be found on my Showcase page, working with one of my students to improve her practice habits for scales and etudes. Amy (name changed for her privacy) had chosen to audition for a prestigious group in fall of 2011, but was not consistently practicing the required scales and etudes for this audition. So, this plan was two fold: increase the practice of these less-than-fun exercises, as well as increase their tempos, as the audition had very specific requirements. While Amy was never great at filling in her charts, she was eventually able to record each of the exercises and send in the audition tape, in fall of 2012.
