The Ancestry of William Atkinson - Atkinson and Related Families in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ohio

William Atkinson, the son of Christopher Atkinson and Nancy Smith Atkinson, was born in Sackville, New Brunswick, 22 September 1812. He emigrated to Utah with his family in 1853, where he settled in South Bountiful (now Woods Cross). This volume discusses in some detail the ancestry of William Atkinson in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and it provides information about his 23 children and their children (the grandchildren of William Atkinson), most of whom settled in Utah and Idaho.

ROBERT ATKINSON, the grandfather of William Atkinson, and his wife Ann Brown Atkinson, were Yorkshire settlers who arrived in Nova Scotia in 1774. They initially settled in Francklin Manor, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, where they rented land from Lt. Gov. Michael Francklin, who was developing a large parcel of land there. They were the parents of 7 children, all of whom were born at Francklin Manor. Ann Brown Atkinson died in 1787 at Francklin Manor. About 1788 or 1789, Robert Atkinson married (2) Mary Killam, the daughter of Amasa Killam and Elizabeth Emerson who were residents of Sackville, New Brunswick. Robert and his family moved to Sackville, and the family remained there. Robert and Mary Killam Atkinson were the parents of 11 children, all of whom were born in Sackville.

The 7 children of Robert Atkinson and Ann Brown, all of whom remained in the area around Sackville, New Brunswick, are:

(1) Jane Atkinson - b. 1775; d. 1784.

(2) Thomas Atkinson - b. 1777; d. 1792

(3) Ann Atkinson - b. 1777 (twin of Thomas). Married Christopher Richardson and had 7 children all born in Sackville, N.B. Ann Atkinson d. 1853.

(4) John Atkinson - b. 1779. Living in 1816. It is not known if he married.

(5) Sarah Atkinson - b. 1781. Married Richard Shepherd Bowser; they lived in Sackville, N.B. Sarah Atkinson d. 1863.

(6) Christopher Atkinson - b. 1782. Married (1) Nancy Smith, daughter of John Smith and Jane Chapman. They were the parents of 8 children. Married (2)Catherine Goodwin, the widow of Isaac Goodwin. They were the parents of 3 children. Christopher Atkinson d. 1849. [His children are listed below.]

(7) Joseph Atkinson - b. 1785. Married Ann Campbell, probably the daughter of Peter Campbell and Martha Patton. They were the parents of at least five children and lived in Sackville, N.B.

The 11 Children of Robert Atkinson and Mary Killam, most of whom left New Brunswick in 1833 and settled in Lake County, Ohio, are:

(8) Elizabeth Atkinson - b. about 1790 in Sackville, N.B. Married Anthony Lowe. They remained in New Brunswick.

(9) Mary Atkinson - b. about 1792 in Sackville, N.B. d. 1794.

(10) Mary Atkinson - b. between 1794 and 1800 in Sackville, N.B. She did not marry, and moved to Lake County, Ohio with her brother before 1850.

(11) Robert Atkinson - b. 1797 in Sackville, N.B. Married Jane Eliza Huggard. They were the parents of 7 children. The family moved to Lake County, Ohio, about 1833 and remained there. d. 1877.

(12) Andrew Atkinson - b. about 1800 in Sackville, N.B. Married Jemima Finney. He and his family moved to Lake County, Ohio, about 1833 with his older brother Robert. He was living in Lake County, Ohio, in 1840 and 1850, but he is not recorded in the 1860 census.

(13) Thomas Atkinson - b. about 1805 in Sackville, N.B. Married Catharine [maiden name unknown]. He moved to Lake County, Ohio, about 1833 with his older brother Robert, and his family remained there.

(14) Jane Atkinson - b. 1806 in Sackville, N.B. Married George Patterson. They remained in New Brunswick.

(15) Olive Atkinson - b. about 1806 or 1807 in Sackville, N.B. Married Finley Ferguson. She moved to Lake County, Ohio, about 1833 with her older brother Robert, and the family remained there.

(16) William Atkinson - b. about 1807 in Sackville, N.B. Married Elizabeth Bowser, daughter of Thomas Bowser and Frances King. He moved to Lake County, Ohio, about 1833 with his older brother Robert. The family apparently remained there.

(17) Amasa Atkinson - b. before 1816 in Sackville, N.B. Not married. d. before 1824.

(18) Benoni Atkinson - b. 1809 in Sackville, N.B. d. 1809.

CHRISTOPHER ATKINSON, the son of Robert Atkinson and Ann Brown Atkinson, was b. 1782 in Francklin Manor, Nova Scotia. Married (1) Nancy Smith, daughter of John Smith and Jane Chapman. They were the parents of 8 children. Married (2) Catherine Goodwin, the widow of Isaac Goodwin. They were the parents of 3 children. Christopher Atkinson d. 1849. In 1840 Christopher Atkinson sold a five acre parcel of land in the town of Sackville to Charles F. Allison. The land was purchased for the construction of the Mount Allison Wesleyan Academy, the institution which eventually evolved into the present-day Mount Allison University.

The Children of Christopher Atkinson and Nancy Smith, all of whom were born in Sackville, N.B., and most of whom remained in New Brunswick, are:

(1) John Atkinson - b. 1805 or 1806 in Sackville. Married Lilly (or Lelia) Hicks. d. 1869.

(2) Robert Atkinson - b. 1808. Married Elizabeth Hicks. Moved to Shediac, Westmorland County, N.B. d. 1885.

(3) Joseph Smith Atkinson - b. 1810. Married Mary T. Allen. He d. 1873.

(4) William Atkinson - b. 1812. Married (1) Phoebe Campbell, who was b. in Sackville, N.B., and (2) Sarah Ann Tingey, who was b. in England. He had 23 children - 15 by his first wife and 8 by his second wife. He emigrated to Utah in 1853, and died there in 1879. [His children and grandchildren, most of whom lived in Utah and Idaho, are identified.]

(5) Stephen Bamford Atkinson - b. 1814. Married Rebecca Lewis Merrill. Remained in Sackville, N.B. He d. 1876.

(6) Thomas Atkinson - b. 1815, Married Mary Oulten. He d. 1885.

(7) Christopher Atkinson - b. 1817. Married Charlotte Mills. He d. 1895.

(8) Nancy Atkinson - b. 1819. Married Edward S. Oulten. She d. 1877.

The Children of Christopher Atkinson and Catharine Goodwin, all of whom were born in Sackville, N.B., and most of whom remained in New Brunswick, are:

(9) George Black Atkinson - b. 1821. Married Lavinia Brownell.

(10) Abel H. Atkinson - b. about 1823. Married (1) Cecilia Ann [last name unknown] and (2) Elizabeth Purdy. He d. 1897.

(11) Sampson Busby Atkinson - b. about 1829. Married Charity Eliza Duney.
