Filippo Schiavon is PhD (School of Bioscences and Biotechnologies) at the Dipartimento di Biologia of the University of Padova since 2013. His interests focus on the study of the signaling transductional pathways involved in both the immune responses and the apoptotic processes which characterize the colonial life-cycle of the ascidian Botryllus schlosseri.

He previously obtained a MSc degree in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Padova in July 2008 with full marks after dissertating on his thesis entitled “Expression studies of a rhamnose-binding lectin in the compound ascidian Botryllus schlosseri”, where he analyzed both the expression and the localization of a particular lectin during the colonial life-cycle of this species.

Then, he got a series of research fellowships at the laboratory of ascidian biology of the Dipartimento di Biologia of the University of Padova under the supervision of Prof. Ballarin:

08/2008 – 12/2008 – Blastogenetic colonial life-cycle of the ascidian Botryllus schlosseri

01/2009 – 04/2009 – Immunomodulation in colonial ascidians

05/2009 – 10/2009 – Immunobiology of the crustacean Squilla mantis

11/2009 – 12/2009 – Blastogenetic colonial life-cycle of the ascidian Botryllus schlosseri

During these experiences in this field of research, he achieved ability with various lab activities such as settlement of immunohistochemical and cytochemical samples, DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR, bacterial cloning and transforming, in situ hybridization, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and Western blotting. Moreover, he is experienced in control of rearing and reproduction of compound ascidians and recognition of the developmental blastogenetic stages of their colonies.
