About me
Degree in 1964 in Biological Sciences at the University of Rome. From 1964, researcher and then teacher at the Faculty of Science, University of Padov. Since 1986 full professor of Comparative Anatomy and, then, of Developmental Biology at the same Faculty. During his career he covered various assignments: Director of the Department of Biology; President of the College of Degrees in Natural Sciences; Member of the College of teachers for PhD School in Evolutionary Biology; Member of the Directory Council of the Unione Zoologica Italiana. Editor of the Italian Journal of Zoology. He has been a Group leader in Research Project Units of MURST, CNR and EC (Mast III).
His main research interest was directed to aspects of biology of lower chordates, mainly to evolution, development, cytodifferentiation, structural and molecular biology of tunicates Results were published in over 100 extended papers on peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He have provided new insights on the morphophysiological aspects of the alimentary tract and blood. He showed that ascidians performed adaptive solution for external and internal fertilization modifying gametes and accessory structures for internal fertilization. With studies of comparative cytology on larvae and adults he also demonstrated that tunicates have close relationships with vertebrates as regards the organization of the striated muscle and the pattern of intercellular junctions.
Then, he studied developmental and evolutionary aspects of nervous system analysing the territories and the mechanisms involved in its formation. He discovered the existence of a relevant sensory organ (the coronal organ) in the oral siphon of all the ascidians, that, as a difference with all the other sensory structures of ascidians, is constituted of secondary sensory cells, cytologically similar to the hair cells of vertebrates. He evidenced that ascidians have neurogenic elements with several correspondence to placodes/neural crests of vertebrates. On invitation, he published several reviews, in particular dealing with the ultrastructure (in the treatise "Microscopical Anatomy of Invertebrates”, Vol. 16, Wiley-Liss) the reproduction (in the “Reproductive Biology of invertebrates”. Vol.9, John Wiley & Sons), the organization and perspective of the neural system (in a volume dedicated to tunicates, Can. J. Zool.) and the evolution of hair cells (in Special issue of Hearing Research 2011). He has been in collaboration with a number of researchers from prestigious Italian and foreign Universities; among them: University of Cambridge (Dr. N.J. Lane); University of Oxford (Dr. S. Shimeld); University of London (Dr. M. C. Thorndyke); University of Washington (Dr. R. Cloney); Università di Siena (Prof. R. Dallai); Università di Milano (Prof. M.D. Candia Carnevali); Universitè de Paris, Station Zoologiche de Villefranche (Dr. R. Fenaux, Dr. G. Gorsky); CNRS, Inst. Neurobiologie, Gif sur Ivette (Dr. J-S. Joly); University of Victoria, Canada (Dr. G.O. Mackie); University of California (L.Z. Holland), University of Kochi (Dr. K. Kawamura).
He retired in 2009 still maintaining his skilful collaboration with the research unit.
