Usually I paint with tube watercolours because I work fast. So, I have bought White Nights tube set first, finished them all and decided to try their pan colours. Initially, I bought a Set of 24 pans in a metal box, then I could not resist buying a 36-pan set in a plastic box.

I like the White Nights for their transparency, brightness, softness and other qualities, not to mention a low cost. All these words are normally written on websites of those who make or sell art paints. But this does not say it all about the White Night as other watercolour paints from big brand names have similar characteristics (apart from the price). The real reason why I use the White Nights is because I am comfortable with them. Painting with the White Nights watercolours to me is like being with a person with whom I like to be and which I love because I'm in good company together, not because I measure its qualities with those of others. The charm of things, like that of persons, does not depend on their quality.

What everyone loves about White Nights Artists'watercolours is the vibrancy, transparency and the beautiful pigments of the pan paints. The complete WN's watercolour palette of 55 paints has a balanced selection of traditional artist colours, including Cobalts and Cadmiums, to suit any painting technique, style or subject. These soft pan watercolours are really rich, delightfully vivid and lift easily with a damp brush without pre-wetting because they aren't completely dry.

The White Nights Artists' watercolour paints are highly loaded with a pigment and most of them (70%) are mono pigment colours. Rich darks are very easy to achieve up to an almost opaque layer as colours are strong and yet transparent if thinned with water.

The White Nights Artists' watercolours are made by a liquid pouring method with a Gum Arabic binder and a touch of honey. The method is considered to be more gentle to preserve the colour of the pigment and keep its brilliance untouched in comparison with dry watercolour cakes produced by dry extrusion. The WN's Earths, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean, Ultramarine, etc. leave a lovely granulation on a paper that adds a lot of character and mood to the paintings. They are often used to create a foreground and middleground textures.

The White Nights Artists' whole pan watercolours are larger and softer than dry half-pan cakes. They are easy to pick up with a brush just like tube paints. When using WN pan watercolours the size of a watercolour wash that you can mix for a large watercolour painting depends only on the amount of water to dilute paints and how big your brush is to pick up paints. WN paints in pans will not crack or harden when accidentally left uncovered or even if you stop using them for an extensive period of 5-10 years. They stay usable for years.

It also is very convenient to carry and use a WN pan set for outdoor sketching and painting on location because there is no need to stop half way through the wash to squeeze out paints from tubes. All the sets come in very compact plastic cases with a detachable lid that can be used as a palette. Inside the case there is an extra space for a small brush and one more palette.

Each White Nights watercolour pan wrapping lists the colour name, product code, lightfastness rating and pigment index name (colour index).

Our advice to you is to keep the pan packaging once you open your new WN set and unwrap pans. You may even cut and glue wrappings to the sheet of paper to create a colour map according to the colour position in the 12/24/36 colour set, i.e. to create the 'plastic box' colour map. The benefits of doing this are, firstly, you will memorize and get familiar with every colour in the box, their location/position and names, mostly because dark colours look alike and are easy to confuse and you don't want it to happen when painting, and, secondly, you will know the product code of the colour you may want to reorder.

Get to know your White Nights colours and develop your unique colour palette to maintain more professional approach to painting with watercolour and you will not waste time wondering why you picked up dark Green or Violet instead of Ultramarine Blue. Or why you cannot lift some colours (Cadmium Yellow, Azure Blue, Prussian Blue, Blue, Bright Blue, Indigo, Emerald Green, etc.), that have staining effect, off the paper when you want to highlight or edit your painting. Thought, the level of the staining can also depends on the type and characteristics of the paper used.
