Synthetic hairs as an alternative to animal hairs have appeared on the art market not too long ago. Synthetic filaments are made of polyester, nylon or a blend of nylon and polyester. Some synthetic brushes for painting imitate Kolinsky and hog bristle ones so closely that those made of synthetics look like they are made of natural materials. There are also brushes made of synthetic and natural hair mixes.

The main advantages of synthetics brushes especially those that successfully duplicate best quality hog bristles and Kolinsky are that they maintain good shape retention and tend to provides artist with maximum control. Because they don't absorb any liquid they keep their stiffness enabling to hold heavy body paints such as acrylics and oils. Synthetic brushes are easy to clean and they last longer than natural animal hair.

But there is at least one major drawback. They are unable to hold a large charge of paint and the more thinner the paint the less control you can get as they tend to release their load all at once. Synthetics is gathering popularity but it will not substitute natural hairs entirely.
