About my post-PIREP posting & joining
When I left PIREP, I did not know where I would get my posting next. Later, it came to my knowledge that the Govt had decided to post me in the Arambagh subdivision in the Hooghly district.
Now, Arambag was a flood-prone area. It was bowl-like in shape, and hardly a monsoon passed without it being severely affected by floods. Besides, there was no railway link to this place. I was not ready to accept a posting at another troublesome subdivision after serving in two interior areas in succession.
I met the Deputy Secretary, Asok Dasgupta, who dealt with the matter in the Home(GA) Department. I had met him once before on the same issue when the proposal was initiated and had requested him not to post me in Arambag. I referred to my earlier request when I met him this time and pleaded for a change of the order. But he was not ready to listen and instead asked me to collect the order that afternoon. I was disgusted and told him straight to his face that it was up to me to collect the order.
I then met B. C. Sharma, the concerned Joint Secretary, and explained my difficulties to him. He assured me he would change the order; I should not receive the order, the Dy. Secretary had asked me to do.
Later, I received an order posting me as Deputy Magistrate & Deputy Collector, Midnapore. The Govt. issued it on April 2, 1976. I joined Midnapore Collectorate on April 7, 1976, and stayed and worked there only for four months, up to August 4, 1976.
Nature of my duty at Midnapore
I was on general duty under the District Magistrate and had mostly been involved in file work, barring some occasional law and order assignment.
