ANTIBES 30KM INTERNATIONAL OPEN WATER SWIM - 9 JUNE 2019 - CONDITIONS, COURSE AND OFFICIAL RESULTS
CONDITIONS
Water temperature 19C (wetsuits optional as per FINA rules).
No jellyfish (except for 1 that stung Julie Newton's arm - nothing bad).
Easterly wind 5-20 knots.
Some sections of the course were choppy at times.
COURSE
Course modified at 5am on the day of the event due to a change in weather forecast with up to 20 knots Easterly winds from lunch time:
- First two 10km segments as per original course: La Gravette to Les Ondes, and Les Ondes Golfe-Juan return
- Third 10km segment changed to Les Ondes Golfe-Juan return, as opposed to Les Ondes to La Gravette which was originally planned, to avoid having paddlers and swimmers go around Cap d'Antibes with 20 knot of head wind is some sections (NB The fast response boat went around the Cap after the event to get back to Port Vauban and reported that the change of course was a safe option)
OFFICIAL RESULTS:
FEMALE
Julie Newton - 1st solo non-wetsuit female finisher in 9:24'.
Julie already has Catalina crossing under the belt and will give the English Channel a good shake in September this year.
Anna-Carin Nordin - 2nd solo non-wetsuit female finisher in 9:52', and first swimmer to complete Manhattan 20 Bridges and Antibes Maxi Plouf 30km 1 week apart (Manhattan on Saturday 1 June and Maxi Plouf on Sunday 9 June) in a total time of 7:50'+9:52'=18:42'.
We are not surprised that Anna-Carin could do this as she is the first women who completed the Seven Oceans, but we are still amazed she did it
MALE
Marco Murari - 1st solo non-wetsuit male finisher in 8:44'.
We are not surprised by Marco's result as he has completed very successfully several 30km+ swims in the past. Marco is planning to cross the English Channel in late July this year.
Willy Preto - Swam the first two segments of the course, i.e. 20km, in a wetsuit in 7:26'.
This is a personal best for Willy who already entered next year's 30km event
Jean-Luc Boulanger - Extremely happy to 1) have contributed to keep everyone safe on the day, relying on an awesome support team, 2) see all the swimmers with a big smile on their face at the finish, and 3) finish the 30km solo swim in a wetsuit in 8:41'
The Luxembourg Sharks relay team: Salvo Andronico, Jon Christensen and Raul Gnaga swam the 30km (10km each) in 7:47', quickest time of the day for 30km
- Salvo Andronico - Relay wetsuit swimmer who completed the first 10km in the quickest time of the day of 2:29'
- Jon Christensen - Relay wetsuit swimmer who completed the second 10km segment in the quickest time of the day of 2:37'
