Representation, Visuality, Media

My work on representation, visuality and media has focused on several topics. To start with, I have always been interested how Muslim women and 'women in the Orient' have been represented both in the media and in academic work, for which I use terms such as 'gendered Orientalism' and 'the racialization of Muslims'. Also in the sections on marriage, dress, and face-veiling I pay attention to these processes. Next to this, I have written extensively on postcards and photographs of Palestine, first those produced for a Euro-American public, later also those produced for Palestinians themselves. Another strand of work is on the effect of specific media as mediation of Islam, be it visuality or soundscapes, and the ways in which internet as a multimodal means of communication divides and unites Muslim publics.
