Last Sunday's Reflection from the Reverend Rob Sutherland CSC - 28 September 2025
Dear Friends,
Happy Birthday to us! (Yes, everyone gets a chocolate this Sunday).
As our church is named after St Michael and All Angels, we get to celebrate our ‘Patronal Festival’ this weekend each year.
Appropriately, this is our opportunity to look at the work of God’s angels and as angels are often God’s messengers, to reflect upon who are we being called to be by God.
I have recently received our ‘Parish Dashboard’; a copy is attached and also on the noticeboards. The graphs reflect our attendances (as reported by us) for the past decade. There are few surprises – (but there may be one year – see if you can pick it – in which our figures have been added together rather than compared side by side). In essence, our attendances have remained about the same for quite a few years. The main change is that we are all a little older. We always have been a ‘Very Small Church.’ As churches which were once ‘Large’ join us in the ‘Very Small’ category, we should remember that on most Sundays our church is over 60% full.
I am interested, perhaps intrigued, but certainly not worried, by God’s plans for us as a church, an Anglican Church. The Lord may have greater challenges ahead for us. We certainly have our hopes and ideas. My prayer continues to be that we will listen to God and trust and faithfully follow.
Our consideration of angels and St Michael this year will be broader than just discussion of battles in heaven. The Collect for Sunday reminds us that God governs the ‘courses of this world by means too wonderful to comprehend:’. We will look more widely at how God has used angels protecting, leading and particularly delivering God’s messages to people. God is unchanging, so it would be wrong to assume we don’t have God’s angels around us even now.
Perhaps our young people can help us be more open to listening to the ‘Word of the Lord.’ Hope to see you in church.
