Interested in joining the lab?
** UPDATE! ** I am currently advertising competitive PhD studentship opportunities in my lab. Click here for more information.
I enjoy working with inquisitive and highly motivated people. Research in the lab addresses a broad range of questions, uses many different genetic techniques, and involves sophisticated bioinformatic and statistical analyses. This will provide lab members with a strong foundation of knowledge and a suite of skills to help ensure future success. In addition, projects often include opportunities for field work and/or travel to visit museum collections.
My approach to mentoring is to build a supportive environment conducive to learning, scientific exploration, and critical thinking. My goal is to help lab members become independent researchers capable of reaching their career goals. I value diversity and encourage outstanding people of any ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background to contact me regarding opportunities in the lab.
Postdocs
For those interested in pursuing postdoctoral research, I am happy to discuss the possibility of applying together for a major research grant (such as from NERC, BBSRC, Leverhulme Trust), and also serving as a mentor for postdoctoral fellowships, such as Marie-Sklodowska-Curie fellowships, Newton International Fellowships, and Durham Addison Wheeler fellowships, etc.
Postgraduates
Funding opportunities for postgraduate students include studentships associated with major research grants in the lab, NERC sponsored Ph.D. studentships, Durham Doctoral Studentships, Commonwealth Scholarships, international student fellowships (see this site for some examples), and others.
Undergraduates
There are opportunities each spring for Durham University undergraduates to work in the lab for 5 weeks. I can also serve as an advisor for students pursuing an integrative Master of Biology and Bachelor of Science degree (MBiol). There are additional opportunities for placement students from other UK universities.
Sound good? Then check out the description of recent research projects, publications, and then contact me by email at a.j.welch<at>durham.ac.uk. In your message please describe your research interests, how they overlap with research in the lab, and if available, your CV/resume or a description of relevant experience.
