The nationally significant map collection of the geographer and politician Fritz Hellwig (1912-2017), which he donated to the Landesarchiv in 2008 together with other documents, is now available online. The content of the collection, which dates back to the 16th century, focuses on the border region between France, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium, a historical as well as contemporary core region of Europe, but also includes map material of Alsace and southern Baden. The collection spans eras and brings together "masterpieces by German, Dutch, and French cartographers," allowing it to "provide an overall picture of cartographic development in a European border region."
