Gazetteers

The standard gazetteer used for all places within the German Empire [1912] can be searched online at http://www.meyersgaz.org/index.aspx.  This site links to maps showing the location of surrounding parishes and the distance to each.

The gazetteer on JewishGen is very helpful for locating places in Germany and linking to a map.  It is based on the 1960 gazetteer.  Go to this link: 

http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp.

Choose Germany from the menu and select one of these search options:

• Phonetically by Daitch-Mokotoff soundex

• is exactly

• starts with

• contains

You may put in a major city in Germany and it will give you the number of miles or kilometers from that city.  Choose G for Google maps.
