Tape to digital conversion:
Some of the cassette tapes to be converted, with a portable player .
The cassette tape to mp3 converter. Reviewed here:
Spectral analysis of audio captured from tape.
Spectral analysis of a different track captured from CD to .ogg format. Note better high frequency response.
Results: the cassette was prepared by playing it on an older boombox type player to get it running smoothly. After this was done, the cassette was placed in the EZCAP machine and played from start to finish. Transferring data using the USB cable proved unsucessful as well as transferring the music through the cable to the combined microphone / headphone port on my laptop. I resorted to an older laptop with separate microphone and headphone inputs, and this worked.
Wow and flutter was nonexistent as far as I could tell, and sound quality was good, but lacking high frequencies. One side of the cassette did not play as well as the other - the signal was low, with a great deal of hiss. Replacing the pads in the cassette may help, and meanwhile I will be looking at tranferring outer cassettes.
The cassette format has proved itself, cassettes dating from 30 years ago still play accurately enough for listening to music, there are many cassettes to convert, and more to purchase online. When the quality is listed as 'good' online I can be sure that it will be acceptable quality unlike a record that may have damage that is un recoverable.
Overall a worthwhile project and a successful initial trial.
