The electronics of pocket radios can produce surprisingly good sound when connected to speakers of sufficient size and quality. It is possible to include the electronics from this radio into a larger music centre type system using larger speakers. Testing with larger speakers has shown very good results as far as music quality is concerned. The output is in mono however, but a dual mono arrangement is envisaged.
The unit is beyond repair
Internals showing band selector and volume control on left, tuning capacitor on the right
The unit uses the SONY CXA 1019 all in one radio and amplifier IC
The rear of the board, showing variable capacitor on the right
Testing using an FM transmitter module of low quality
The re-use of this radio will mean that this is one set of toxic substances that will not be sent to the landfill. It is hoped that there will be a way to recycle these efficiently at some point in the future. One alternative is solder less , board-less designs.
The final product as imagined
