In 2015, the home stereo developed problems and could not be repaired. The search for a replacement led me to experiment with various low power amplifiers, a vintage stereo system, and building 'speakers': speaker cabinets.
Low power amplifiers with an output power between 0.3W and 2.0 Watts can put out a surprisingly loud signal, suitable for most music listening in small rooms. (70 dB at 1 metre ). The low power of these amplifiers is a bonus in one sense: it is not possible to disturb people in adjoining rooms or the living room. Clarity is excellent, as can be judged by hearing a level of detail only possible with headphones - but paired to the right speakers.
