While responsibilities called many of us reluctantly home, our friend and fellow traveler, Patricia Wheeler, went on to Denali National Park in search of more wildlife. Based on the wonderful pictures she sent, her trip was well worth the extra travel. She graciously shares some of her pictures with us below.
20,320 foot Mount McKinley, North America's highest peak, viewed from the train.
A Grizzley Mom and her cubs wander down the road and very close to the bus.
Mountain Azalea blooming among Bell Heather.
The infamous Black Oystercatcher makes it's home at Denali as well!
The American Golden Plover, with Breeding plumage, migrates to Alaska to breed and winters in Hawaii and other tropical destinations.
An Arctic Ground Squirrel comes up to investigate.
Carribou, with new horns in velvet, grazing on the hillside.
A Mew Gull with Summer breeding plumage a ways from the ocean.
A Northern Goshawk looking for food. The Northern Goshawk is the largest North American accipiter, taking prey as large as grouse, crows, and snowshoe hare.
What looks like a variety of Potentilla growing up out of the moss.
A Breeding Male Willow Ptarmigan, Alaska's State Bird. This is the largest and most abundant of the three ptarmigan species.
