Workshop on

Mutual

Understanding

March 29-30, 2019

Department of Philosophy,

Yale University

The Yale University Workshop on Mutual Understanding explored the notion of understanding others. Participants will consider various domains of mutual understanding, such as action and speech at both the individual and collective levels. Moreover, they will take into account diverse forms and tools of mutual understanding, such as mind reading, imaginative empathy, and the capacity to adopt someone else’s perspective.

The workshop aimed at fostering the dialogue between, on the one hand, the conceptual inquiries into mutual understanding—notably in philosophy—and, on the other hand, the empirical evidence and the practical applications of such inquiries in psychology and cognitive science.
