Prof. Christopher Mwangi Gakuu

Prof. Christopher Mwangi Gakuu is currently an Associate Professor in the University of Nairobi. He is also currently the Director, ODeL Campus in addition to a former Associate Dean and Chairman of Department of Extra- Mural Studies in the University of Nairobi.   

Prof. Gakuu was responsible for the chairing several University of Nairobi Committees in transiting the University of Nairobi to full online teaching using the blended mode of instructional delivery during the COVID-19 crisis which saw the University continue with her academic programmes including graduations and admitting and teaching of new students joining all academic disciplines. 

Prof. Gakuu holds a PhD in Distance Education from the University of Nairobi, an MBA from United States International University (USIU) and a Bachelor of Education degree from Kenyatta University and several other diplomas.

He is involved in the development, management and evaluation of academic and administration of distance learning programmes. He has an experience of 20 years in the use of open, distance and e-learning   technologies to deliver education. This includes short courses in Free University of Belgium and Open University of Netherlands. He also participated in an eight months intensive e-Learning in Practice Blended Learning Course from October 2007 – May 2008 by organized by InWent (Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung gGmbH of Germany. 

He was an online instructor for African Virtual University (AVU) in the Professional Development Programme (PDP) training university ODeL managers in 10 Universities in Africa. He has previously served as a high school where he rose to the position of Deputy Principal. He was involved in the AVU Capacity Enhancement Programme (ACEP) on the Management and Governance of online programmes and several other certificates in e- Learning. 

Prof. Gakuu has been the Principal Researcher with the Pan Africa Research Agenda in Pedagogical Integration of ICT in Education in Africa and also a member of the Information Technology for Learning, Education and Training Technical Committee in Kenya Bureau of Standards. He has special interest in e-Learning and distance education as modes of instructional delivery.  He has been worked as a consultant for various organizations for instance, African Medical Research Foundation(AMREF), National Aids and STI’s Control Programme (NASCOP), Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI), Kenyatta University, Karen Hospital and many more organizations as a trainer, reviewer and editor for e-learning study modules. He has published widely in the areas of distance education and e learning. 

 He has published widely in the disciplines of distance learning and project management. He has also supervised over 15 PhD candidates to completion.
