Administration of Online Teaching in Nigerian Private Universities during Covid-19 lockdown: Evidence from Al-hikmah University

Dr. Yusuf Suleiman is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Educational Management and Counselling, Faculty of Education, Al-Hikmah University, Kwara State, Nigeria. He obtained his PhD at the prestigious Universiti Utara Malaysia (An Eminent Management University). He has presented papers in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Azerbaijan, South Korea and Ghana. He’s also the Director, Centre for Research, Industrial Linkage and International Cooperation (CRIIC) and also the Managing Editor of Al-Hikmah Journal of Educational Management and Counselling, Al-Hikmah University, Nigeria.

Abstract

The novel covid-19 pandemic is unarguably the main concern of countries in the world. As a result of high increase in virus cases, all higher institutions in Nigeria were shut down in year 2020, which enabled few universities to switch to online teaching as a way of ensuring uninterrupted academic calendar. Al-Hikmah University was the first private university in Nigeria to employ online teaching. It is on this premise that this study examined administration of online teaching in Nigerian private universities with reference to Al-Hikmah University. Four research questions were generated to guide the study. The questions are: What is lecturers’ perception of online teaching initiative in Al-Hikmah University? What are the administrative strategies put in place on administration of online teaching and learning initiative in Al-Hikmah University? What are the challenges associated with administration of online teaching and learning initiative in Al-Hikmah University? What are the measures that can be used to improve administration of online teaching and learning initiative in Al-Hikmah University? Research design of qualitative type was adopted for the study. The population consists of all lecturers of the university. Stratified, purposive and convenience techniques were employed to select six participants across five faculties. An instrument titled “Interview Protocol on Administration of Online Teaching (IPAOTS)” was used to elicit relevant information from the participants. Data collected was transcribed and analyzed using thematic approach.  Findings revealed that Zoom, WhatsApp, and Telegram were employed by lecturers to teach students. The administrative strategies used for the conduct of online teaching include planning, coordinating, supervising, directing, and evaluating. Also, findings indicates challenges that are associated with online teaching. They include poor network, inadequate data, poor attitude of students, and power outage. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that constant training of lecturers, adequate data subscription, proper planning, and sound policy on e-learning are needed for effective online teaching in universities.
