Abstract

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has a long history of using technology to support teaching and learning. As an alternative approach to the traditional lecturer-focused MIT model, the RipMixLearners Project was initiated in 2008.  As a student driven project, it was aimed at investigating what transpires when students use Web 2.0 applications such wiki’s, blogs and social media, to become producers of their own knowledge, rather than consumers of information prepared for them.

While UWC provides basic ICT skills training, it does not offer advanced courses in the use and production of multimedia. UWC’s Digital Media unit was the logical choice to offer support as their staff already possessed the skills and housed the basic technological infrastructure to enable the development of the students.

The workshop objective is to introduce participants to various 21st century digital tools and provide an opportunity to identify and select tools appropriate to their own levels of digital literacy. Participants will be divided into groups and investigate, discuss, recommend and report on the affordances of various multimedia assemblage tools.
