Abstract
The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges – previously known as Further Education and Training (FET) colleges fall under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
The presentation will highlight the role of TVET Colleges, as envisioned in the White Paper on Post-School Education and Training for TVET Colleges and as launched by Minister Blade Nzimande in 2014 which is: “to train young school leavers, providing them with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for employment in the labour market.” (White Paper 2013: 11).
This presentation will illuminate to the various strategies in place which seek to address the development and support of an articulated post-school education and training system: one where bridges are created between vocational or occupational programmes and academic programmes (both vertically and horizontally) in such a way that there are no dead ends for learners which is also underpinned by the principles of the National Qualifications Framework.
The outcomes of this presentation will explore the contributing factors such as, mobility and portability of qualifications; career guidance; reviewing current college curricula; the quality of education in colleges; articulation; partnerships and the alignment between SETAs, TVETs, universities, and other educational systems broaden epistemological access.
