The 2012 meeting of the Middle Atlantic Division of the Association of American Geographers is scheduled on November 2-3, 2011 in Salisbury, Maryland. The Department of Geography and Geosciences of Salisbury University is hosting the meeting. We are joining the Pennsylvania Geographical Society this year. The attached flyer has details of activities, submission deadlines, and registration procedures. Brent Zaprowski is managing the registrations for all participants, so MAD members will register the same way as PGS members, preferably on-line.
We have held joint meetings in the past, and members have enjoyed talking with geographers of other areas. I am looking forward to seeing geographers of the Keystone State as well as MAD friends. We will have the Geography Bowl of college teams from our region and will select the team members to represent MAD at the national AAG meeting next February in Los Angeles. I hope faculty will encourage students to submit papers, posters, and maps for the sessions and student competitions.
Friday luncheon keynote speaker is Gerald R. Webster, Professor and Chair, Department of Geography, University of Wyoming. Gerry is a political geographer, and I expect he will talk about the election campaign. The Friday banquet is to be at the Ward Museum. The Ward brothers carved decoys for hunters and as decorative art from the 1920s- 1970s. The Ward Museum displays their work and other pieces in conjunction with its mission of education and interpretation of the watermen and their communities of the Eastern Shore. On Friday afternoon, November 2nd, 2:00 – 5:00pm, geographic educators plan a workshop for middle and high school teachers. Highlights include an example of an integrative unit for students around geography and social studies issues; working with GIS (geographic information systems) directly on-line with browser-based investigation of the spatial factors of a topic; seeing geography in the social studies curriculum as well as a STEM ingredient. It is an opportunity for networking with other teachers, of Delaware and Maryland, and for sharing sources and data for geographic lessons. For additional information about the workshop, contact Cathy Cooper: phone: 410-822-3451; e-mail: coopercw@goeaston.net.
I hope to see you in Salisbury November 2-3. Let me know if you have questions.
