Reliability, Testing, and Safety
Pre-flight TestingAs with all space systems, pre-launch testing of both individual components and integrated subsystems is crucial. In addition to standard industrial electronics testing, all SunWire components undergo space-certification procedures, including vibration testing on a shake table and application-oriented thermal testing.Post-Assembly Testing in Orbit
Once assembled in LEO, engineers will conduct further tests to verify proper functionality. The inter-satellite and earth-to-satellite communications links will be tested, as well as a self-monitoring systems. A preliminary test will verify the correct operation of the solar power collection system and DC-to-RF power conversion process.
Safety
A variety of environmental considerations and safety-related factors should continue to receive consideration because of public concerns about radio wave exposure. Above the center of the rectenna, the link's power flux density will be considerably higher than the currently permissible safety levels for human beings.
Since established safety limits for microwave exposure are exceeded in an area around and above the rectenna, access would need to be carefully controlled to ensure environmental safety and health standards are maintained.
