Video Assignment
The purpose of this lesson is to observe and critique yourself teaching and your lesson and identify strengths, areas for improvement and goals for development. In the process of reflecting on your teaching, your cooperating teacher will offer an additional critique and perspective on your teaching based on this video. After your collegial dialog with your cooperating teacher about the video, only then are you ready to write your video reflection. Please read process below and rate yourself according to the rubric below:
Instructions:
1. Videotape yourself teaching a lesson.
2. Watch the video once by yourself. Record notes of your observations as you are viewing the video.
3. Watch the video with your cooperating teacher. Record notes of your cooperating teachers’ observations, insights and recommendations as you are viewing the video. When you share the video with a colleague, you can select a shorter segment with in the lesson – i.e., perhaps there is something that caught your attention in the middle of the video, take your colleague to that point, give him/her some context and watch that segment carefully together once or twice. Or, you might select several segments to share with your colleague. The point is that your colleague does not have to watch the whole lesson. Rather, you can identify an area you'd like to get a second set of eyes on and focus on that segment.
4.
Have a discussion with your cooperating teacher about the video. Be sure to share the protocol you are following with him/her. During this discussion you will share your notes with your cooperating teacher and he/she will share his/her notes with you. In your discussion, address what you observed as strengths, areas for improvement, what went well in the lesson and what did not go so well. Have your cooperating teacher share with you ideas for improvement and/or development. (Take notes during this discussion as you will be including a summary of this discussion in your video reflection).
