The 15th Oxford Scout Group was founded in 1915. The original troop was registered with the local Oxford City Scout Association in 1915, under the leadership of John A Greenaway and meeting at the Baptist Church school room in New Inn Hall Street.
John Greenaway led the troop from its formation until 1926, where the role was taken on by Ralph Bodey. In 1928, the Greenaway shield was inaugurated to commemorate the role he played in the troop. This shield is still held in the troop and awarded each year to the winning Patrol of weekend camps. John Greenaway was said to have served with Baden-Powell in South Africa, where B-P formed his first ideas for the Boy Scout Movement.
Ralph took on the role of Acting Scout Master in 1926, due to Mr Greenaway’s ill-health. By 1928, he had taken on the role full-time. This was to be the start of a long-lasting relationship between the Bodey family and the 15th Oxford Scout Group. In 1953-54, B R Abrams took over the Scout Section whilst Ralph Bodey became Group Scout Leader. In 1958, Roy Darnell took over as Scout Leader
In 1963, leadership of the Scout section returned to the Bodey family, under Philip Bodey. At this time, Ralph Bodey was still Group Scout Leader, whilst Philip’s older brother, Donald, ran the younger Cub pack.
The Troop celebrated its Golden Jubilee and unknowingly set a precedent of getting its founding date wrong, by doing so in 1968! Further evidence has since shown that prior to formal registration in 1915, the Troop has been in existence since 1909, when Mr Greenaway was first warranted, and recorded unofficially in the local Oxford and District Boy Scout’s Chronicle.
By 1971, Stephen Bodey took over from his older brother to be Scout Leader. Stephen led the troop steadily through the 70s, leading to a change of premises from the New Road Baptist Church to Botley Baptist Church. He obviously settled them well, as they still use the Botley premises to meet each week!
Sadly, in 1983 Ralph Bodey passed away, after 56 years of service to the troop. The Ralph Bodey shield was created in his memory, and is still the most important award within the troop. It is awarded annually to the winning patrol of the Summer Camp competition, and has recorded the success of many fine local scouts and their patrols over the years.
In 1985, Terry Saxton took over as Scout Leader. Under his direction, he led the troop for 21 years, taking on many of the roles of Group Scout leader as well for much of that time.
Many scouts from the 15th have incredibly fond memories of Tebs and his wife June and family. Even today Terry is still involved with the group as part of our the executive committee.
In 2006, Oliver Faulkner took over the role of Scout Leader, before becoming our Group Scout leader (GSL) in 2019. After reading through the troop log books (that date back to 1922), he is now aware of just how many people in Oxford, Botley and the surrounding areas have helped support the group through the years, and also how many Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Ventures and Rovers have been involved. There are so many names that could be mentioned, it is difficult to know where to start!
In 2017 Olly oversaw our move out of the Baptist church on Westminster Way and into our temporary home in the old Grant Thornton building, above what was then the temporary Co-Op This was a home we would keep until 2020 when our new building building would complete
Finally, in 2019 Tom Freeman took over as Scout leader, Tom oversaw our move from our temporary home to our brand new home, back with the Botley Baptist Church.
The a rest is a work in progress
