Serious about Culture

Employee’s voices are listened to and feedback is always addressed from event requests and ED&I campaigns to changes to recycling culture initiated net zero reporting, various staff surveys including eNPS and stress surveys. 

Surf’s-Up Policy

Singer believes in a healthy work-life balance with staff encouraged to limit weekly working hours. Staff are given flexible options, with even a zero-notice time off policy, which can support personal commitments, such as childcare or opportunities to pursue hobbies. Singer conducts regular staff surveys using the Management Standards Indicator Tool from the Health and Safety Executive. Singer holds a Gold Rating for Health and Safety for both premises and has been showcased on the HSE website for mental health recognition.

Singer’s HR Calendar includes Annual Appraisals and Personal Development Plans. These help structure how we value, learn from, train, and invest in our staff. Singer have a broad spectrum of training opportunities delivered both internally and externally.

As an early part of our robust training process, Singer host school visits, take work experience students and internships across STEM disciplines. Our first ever ‘Professional Internship for PhD Students’ placement came back to work for Singer after completion of their PhD and is now running a team of 6 as Quality Manager. Singer are also very proud to be training West Somerset’s first ever PhD candidate.

Shared Success

As well as contributing to the Management Structure and a clear strategy for Company growth, all staff at Singer share in the financial success that comes with strategy execution. ‘Profit Share for Nerds’, launched in 2016, divides profit between company reinvestment and all employees. In 2021 profit share was revised to include a free shares offering with all employees now having the option of shares in the company based on performance.

Equity for Nerds

Extending the bonus scheme Singer launched ‘Equity for Nerds’ in 2018, with 20% of the Company’s equity set aside for employees. With a 50% adoption rate; half of Singer’s team are now business owners with a tax-efficient SIP. Singer believes that distributing Company ownership, trust and responsibility can only be a good thing for Singer Instruments, its staff, and the regional economy.

Singer Instruments was established in 1934, is headquartered in Somerset on the edge of Exmoor, and develop robots for biotechnology. Our products accelerate science in laboratories in over 50 countries, for customers like NASA, Nobel laureates such as Sir Paul Nurse, Cancer Research UK, and the top 50 universities in the World.  As a third-generation family business, Singer are a friendly SME with traditional values, but with a dynamic vibe more like a tech startup. Growing at a rate of about 25% per year, we stay ahead of our competition through constant investment in innovation.

Our multi-disciplinary development teams are continually refining our agile approach to rapid prototyping and product development. Our state-of-the-art factory with 3D printing facilities, precision CNC manufacture and robotic coordinate measurement allows us to design, iterate, manufacture, program, assemble and QC all of our core products on site. Customer feedback sits at the heart of development prioritisation. To better support and engage with overseas markets, Singer have opened satellite offices and Applications Laboratories in California, Singapore and Germany. Having run out of space at HQ, we're also opening a new R&D Lab in Minehead.
