Title: Advanced Lexical Relations I
This lesson is the first in a two-part series on advanced lexical relations in FLEx. It focuses on understanding and creating custom lexical relation types by evaluating their underlying structures, and configuring them in the FLEx dictionary database.
Understand the semantic nature of lexical relations between words.
Identify and work with underlying structures: collection, scale, tree, pair (bidirectional/unidirectional).
Create custom lexical relation types using the Configuration Tool in FLEx.
Lexical Relations:
Semantic associations between lexemes (e.g., synonym, antonym, part-whole).
Underlying Structures:
Lexical relations can be structured in 18 possible configurations, based on:
Type: Collection, Scale, Tree, Pair (1 or 2 relation names), or Unidirectional.
Level: Entry-level, Sense-level, or mixed.
Directionality: Bidirectional or Unidirectional.
Activities using Sense Collection (e.g., synonyms) and Entry Collection (e.g., compare).
Modifying display of lexical relations in FLEx via the Configure Dictionary tool:
Suppressing sense numbers
Changing labels (e.g., cf → "See also")
Reordering relation types
Displaying glosses selectively using duplicated nodes
Create and edit custom relation types like "Compare (Sense)"
Insert cross-references between specific senses
Format and reposition lexical data presentation
Use Context Control features to stylize dictionary output
