Network HEART Projects, formerly Network Summer Service Projects, were established in 1989. Unique to our Network, these projects serve as a reminder of the importance of being part of a larger community with one common mission.
In the Fall of 2024, the Network announced a deliberate pause and convened a Task Force to help reimagine these projects. The result of this process is the launch of Network HEART Projects—Holistic Engagement through the Active Reflection of Truth. More than just a new name, these projects represent a renewed vision. With the support of the Task Force, the Network Office has developed a newly articulated vision for these projects, including a mission statement, project components, and new project models.
Rooted in the Goals and Criteria, Network HEART Projects offer immersive service-learning experiences that prepare students to serve the common good and promote the inherent dignity of all people. Guided by Catholic Social Teaching and using the Sacred Heart Way, Network participants come together to examine social justice issues and diverse realities around the world. These programs educate for informed action and active citizenship through critical analysis, reciprocity, community partnerships, and self-reflection.
Network HEART Projects educate students on the complexities and realities of social justice issues, forming individuals who:
Examine their own life experiences and personal biases, recognizing how these shape their perspectives and influence their understanding of the world.
Engage in contemplative practices to seek truth and work for justice.
Demonstrate a genuine understanding of community and care for others that is reflective of the attitudes of Christ’s heart.
Commit themselves to act with purpose and personal agency to eradicate social structures that perpetuate injustice.
Eligibility depends on the model:
Model 1
Open to Network students. Each project has different age/grade and other eligibility requirements. Each is listed in the Projects by Model page of this site.
Model 1 projects are also open to Network faculty to apply to serve as a chaperone.
Students may apply to multiple projects (separate applications required)
Model 2
Only schools may apply; individual students or faculty cannot apply.
Projects under this model are meant for schools to collaborate with the lead school. These projects have a lead coordinator from the organizing school and have a select number of spots for other Network schools to participate with a group from their school.
Schools interested in participating must select a coordinator from their staff who will work with the lead coordinator and others to support the project and serve as the primary point of contact for their school group. Selected schools will bring their own group and work collaboratively with the lead coordinator.
All applications are due January 16, 2026.
The Student Application information can be found on the Application Information section of this site.

The cost of Network Summer Service Projects varies based on the project's length and other factors such as housing facilities. Please refer to the project details section for specifics.
All Project costs include:
Housing
Meals during the project
Local transportation
Basic program supplies
Airport pick-up and drop-off in the host city - Within flying parameters as set by the coordinators and communicated with acceptances.
NOT Included
Travel to and from the project location is not included in the project price; families are responsible for these costs.
Yes, the Network is deeply committed to these projects and will offer financial assistance for participation fees for students. This does not include travel to and from the project. Once accepted, students and schools HEART contacts will receive additional information on how to apply for financial assistance. With the addition of new models and different variability between projects, we are aware that the costs for participating in some projects is higher than others, and higher than in years past. However, please be assured that the Network is committed to granting assistance as best we can.
Housing accommodations vary by project. In the majority of projects, the host school houses the students and faculty chaperones on campus. However, there are various projects that partner with an outside organization, like a local retreat house or an organization affiliated with Sacred Heart, for housing. Lastly, there are new projects this year, that will stay at modest hotels near the project location and with the group.
While HEART Projects often take place during the summer, they are not limited to that timeframe. Depending on the model, some projects may occur during the academic year, including during breaks or long weekends. The timing is determined by the host school and the nature of the program. Model 2: Collective Change Projects & Model 3: Established Impact Projects do not require the project to be conducted during the summer. Model 1: Legacy Projects are required to take place in the summer.
