A Number Talk is a short discussion (10 minutes) among teacher and students about the various ways to solve a particular mental math problem. To start a number talk, the teacher gives the students a SHORT math problem to solve -- but the students are not permitted to use a paper and pencil to solve.
Parents/Guardians...Number Talks are ideally experienced with a full class or small group.
However, your child can share their strategies with you on how they figured out an answer and you can share your strategies as well. We do these in Math Class and it's always interesting to hear the various ways the kiddies solve the same problem and arrive at the correct answer. *Or to discuss an incorrect answer which gives an opportunity to learn.
*Please know we're giving basic concepts....as to not overwhelm...feel free to challenge your kiddies and make up your own or even have the kiddies make up one. Ask your child how they got their answer, is it reasonable...does it make sense etc.?
Number Talk Example
How many ways can you express the number 5?
3 + 2 = 5 (2 x 2) + 1 10/2
13 - 8 = 5 (3 x 5) - 10
See how many different ways you can express 5. You can use more than two numbers and/or operations. 5th graders should also use multiplication, division, fractions, or decimals to challenge themselves!!!! :) Discuss if your child's responses are reasonable. How did they figure out using mental math? Have fun sharing your different strategies!!!!!
