We continue to expand the Whitman Dance Program. With the addition of our second dance educator, Miss Olivia Minogue, we have added dance courses for both dance and physical education credit. This year, Stimson students have the opportunity to take dance too!
The Whitman Dance Program (WDP) is a NYS accredited dance program and meets all NYS Standards for the Arts. We offer four dance courses: Studio in Dance I, Studio in Dance II, and Modern Dance I and Modern Dance II/III. The course work is organized sequentially by level, not age. Studio in Dance I and Modern Dance I provide Art Credit for the Regents diploma. All classes provide rigorous technical training daily, dance history and composition, small group instruction, performance opportunities, and field trips to see professional performances. Dance experience is not required. The Whitman Dance Program offers options for students with little to no dance experience and students who plan to pursue dance in college and professionally. The Whitman Dance Program emphasizes developing students as artists, technicians and compassionate motivated human beings.
Three sections of our newest course offering, Everyone Can Dance will be offered! This course is an excellent option for students who enjoy dancing or just want to move during the school day! ECD provides physical education credit.
The WDP is a chapter in the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Whitman dancers have been recipients of the prestigious Long Island Scholar Artist Award for Dance, Otto Kahn Award for Dance, Stage the Change Choreography Award, Rea Jacobs Dance Award, and PTA Reflections winners. The dancers have performed at Tilles Center, Hofstra University, Heckscher Museum, and the Whitman Birthplace.
The Whitman Dance Program is housed in a beautiful 35' X 20' studio with sprung floors, mirrors, dressing rooms, and is ideally located adjacent to the Performing Arts Center. Its walls are decorated with professional and student artwork. Please feel free to visit, watch a class, and discuss your involvement in the program.
