The use of images can greatly enhance reports, presentations, and other projects when used appropriately and sparingly. Images can be organized into three main categories...those YOU own, those OTHERS own, and those that NOBODY owns.
You are free to use images that YOU own at any time in your projects without asking for the right to use them (permission) or needing to give credit for them (attribution).
In order to use images OTHERS own, you must have permission to use them and also know if you need to give them attribution (see video top right). Many times these images will have what is called a "Creative Commons" license (see video bottom right). This type of license can give you some flexibility with how the images are used in your projects. You need to look carefully at the license to know what you can and cannot do with the images.
Images that NOBODY owns are considered "Public Domain" and do not require permission to use, but still should be given attribution if possible.
The image search engines below will help you locate images that are either in the public domain or have a Creative Commons license.
Check to see if the image in is the Public Domain or has a Creative Commons license. Public Domain and CC0 licenses have you good to go! Otherwise, check the chart below:

PERMISSION:
From the owner: "I am quite happy for people to use images of my antique prints and maps on their own web pages as long as the use is non-commercial. Those running personal websites dealing with family history, genealogy, or other historical research etc. are most welcome to copy any of the map or print images for their own use, as are charity and non-profit organizations. Also I suggest any images used are saved to your own server and not linked directly to on my website. Please contact me if any images are wanted for commercial purposes, for which I usually charge a very nominal fee."
