The SAE (supervised agriculture experience) project is a required component of a total agricultural education program and intended for every student. Through their involvement in the SAE program, students are able to consider multiple careers and occupations, learn expected workplace behavior, develop specific skills within an industry, and are given opportunities to apply academic and occupational skills in the workplace or a simulated workplace environment. SAE projects also qualify members for different award areas in FFA. Students track their SAE porjects with the the Agricultural Experience Tracker (AET) online program.

Members who excel in their Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) programs can be recognized through the Proficiency Award program at the local, state and national levels. These awards encourage members to develop specialized skills that will apply toward a future career. A student can select from two proficiency award categories. One is called "placement," for work experience-only SAE programs. The other, called "entrepreneurship," is for programs that typically involve ownership of an agricultural production or agribusiness enterprise.
