Tomales High School was started on August 5, 1912. From the start, vocational education was important to the community. Agriculture and various other vocational classes were offered for boys at the high school during the earlier years, and after the Smith Hughes Act of 1917 the courses became firmly established. The Tomales FFA chapter was chartered on October 1, 1929 by 18 young men of the high school and their teacher, Mr. William Reasoner. Our founding members were: Francis Cornett, Neibo Casini, Donato Albini, Lawrence Cunningham, Tom Greer, Edward Williams, Paul Jones, Lester Hulbert, Eddie Poncia, Walter Mache, Peter Giacomelli, Joe Wilson, Francis Righetti, Arnold Righetti, Henry Neles, Donovan Rego, George Slattery and Wilbur Parks. Many of these families still live in the area and their great and great-great grandchildren attend Tomales High School today.
In 1967, the high school and agriculture department moved about a mile down the road to the high school’s current location in Tomales. Students in the agriculture shop built a classroom and storage area in the shop. Students farmed 3 acres of ground behind the school growing wheat, pumpkins, and various other crops until the late 1980’s. In the early 2000's the shop was upgraded to introduce welding to the program. In 2024, Tomales FFA expanded to included middle schoool members from Tomales Elementary School. Now 7th and 8th graders can now take Introduction to Agriculture as an elective. In 2025 the agriculture science class moved into its new classroom built to support a new farm to table course. The new classroom includes kitchens and other facilities such as a greenhouse and covered storage building, and an updated garden space with a small chicken coop to be completed soon! Â
We look forward to celebrating our chapter's 100 year anniversary in 2029! We are collecting pictures for our centennial celebration. If you have pictures you would like to share please email them to jen.murphy@shorelineunified.org.
