Shepherd Elementary School

Throughout the year, the Shepherd Elementary School PTO hosts events to help and improve our school community with the support of Shepherd families and the wider community. We also raise vital funds that benefit our children by paying for additional resources that augment your child's elementary education. The PTO funds such items as experiential learning, supplemental field trips, student programming and performances, extracurricular activities, and more.

While monetary contributions are always welcome, we also offer opportunities to contribute your time and talent to support Shepherd.

Parent-Teacher Organization

Studies show that parental involvement plays a significant role in student achievement and performance. A strong parent group can make a tremendous difference in how a school functions. We encourage all our families to join the Shepherd Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (SES PTO). It is a wonderful way to get to know the other great families in our school community. In addition, it serves as a vehicle for you to voice your opinion on important issues affecting your child’s learning environment. The PTO holds monthly meetings.

Local School Advisory Team

The Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) is a group of elected and appointed members that exists for every DCPS school. The team (formerly the Local School Restructuring Teams) consists of parents, teachers, non-instructional school staff, a community member, and in some cases students, to advise the principal on matters that promote high expectations and high achievement for all students. The LSAT holds monthly meetings.

Room Parent Network

The role of the Shepherd Room Parent Network is to help facilitate communication between teachers, families, the PTO, and Shepherd administration. Responsibilities include sharing class-specific information and school events with families, organizing parent help for class activities, helping with fundraisers, and encouraging PTO participation.

For SY2024-25, each homeroom was allocated a $400 PTO budget for room parent support. If you are unsure of your homeroom's balance, please reach out to the Room Parent Network Coordinator, Jodi Arellano, or ptotreasurer@shepherd-elementary.org.

Please note that we are in need of additional Committee Chairs, and volunteers are always welcome on all Committees.
