Health Education is a required course for all students in New York State, designed to empower learners with the knowledge and skills needed to live safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives. This semester-long course fosters a sense of belonging and inclusivity, equipping students with tools to navigate real-life health-related challenges while addressing the diverse experiences and needs of all learners.
Grounded in New York State and the National Health Education Standards, the curriculum emphasizes practical application through skill-building in communication, relationship management, decision-making, planning and goal-setting, stress management, advocacy, self-management, and CPR/AED training. The course integrates a focus on mental health and well-being, including mental health literacy topics such as awareness, recognition, treatment, recovery, access to services and supports, and self-help strategies for maintaining mental wellness.
Students will explore relevant topics in a supportive environment that values their unique perspectives, strengths, and experiences. These topics include:
Alcohol and other substance use prevention
Family life and sexual health
Parenting
HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention
Sexual health and risk reduction
Physical activity and nutrition
Nicotine use and prevention
Unintentional injury prevention
Violence prevention
By providing opportunities to practice these skills in meaningful, real-world contexts, this course prepares students to make informed decisions, advocate for themselves and others, and contribute to a healthier, more equitable community.
.5 Unit
This is a hybrid of a traditional and online Health program and will follow the same curriculum as the Health class offered during the school year.
Course Requirements
It is highly recommended that if a student knows they will be missing more than one class, that they should not elect to take this program. It is a 20 week course that will be condensed into a 6 week course.
