Gen. Stonewall Jackson Memorial Scholarship presented by the Capt. Jack Adams SCV Camp
-Must be continuing education after high school in college or technical school.
-An additional essay is required.
Capt. Jack Adams Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans Essay
Capt. Jack Adams served in Company K of the 23rd Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. He served under Generals Inboden and Early during the Valley Campaign. He was Postmaster at Quicksburg after the war, and was a dedicated fundraiser for monuments in the Shenandoah Valley. He died in 1904.
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-63) was one of the South's most successful generals during the American Civil War (1861-65). After a difficult childhood, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in time to fight in the Mexican War (1846-48). He then left the military to pursue a teaching career. After his home state of Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, Jackson joined the Confederate army and quickly forged his reputation for fearlessness and tenacity during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign later that same year. He camped with his soldiers at Rude's Hill near this school. He served under General Robert E. Lee (1807-70) for much of the Civil War. Jackson was a decisive factor in many significant battles until his mortal wounding by friendly fire at the age of 39 during the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863.
This SCV Camp serves southern and central Shenandoah County. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a strictly patriotic, historical, educational, fraternal, benevolent, nonpolitical, nonracial, and nonsectarian organization. The Sons of Confederate Veterans neither embraces nor espouses acts or ideologies of racial or religious bigotry, and, further, condemns the misuse of its sacred symbols and flags in the conduct of the same. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is dedicated to the preservation of the history and memory of Southern Confederate heritage, in which we take justifiable pride, and of the commemoration of its members' ancestors who fought, and often died, in
furtherance of a cause that they believed to be just.
Please choose one of the following prompts on which to write an essay of at least 150 words.
1) What impact did the Civil War have on a specific ancestor of yours who lived at that time? (ancestry.com could be helpful finding an ancestor)
2) What best describes the conflict from 1861-1865 and why? a Civil War, a War for Southern Independence, or a War of Northern Aggression?
3) What was the real reason for the Civil War?
4) What meaningful inventions came about because of the Civil War?
5) List 3 reasons why the Shenandoah Valley was so prominent during the war.
6) What was the true purpose of the Emancipation Proclamation?

Addie B. Sanders was a kind, caring and giving woman all of her life. She lived to serve her Lord and do good in every way possible.
She never knew luxuries or monetary wealth in her life, but she was rich with love, kindness, compassion and grace and she believed that every living being in our world was worthy of these things.
Addie grew her own food. She made use of all her land by raising beef, fruit and vegetables. She made sure that the pollinators had plenty of flowers. especially Zinnas to eat from. She knew the importance of their work. She always planted extra vegetables in her garden and never picked her fruit trees bare because the wildlife “needed to eat too.” If there was soil, she was going to plant something in it. She took great pride in what she grew and preserved.
Addie not only looked after wildlife, she made sure that her family, friends and neighbors were taken care of. She fed anyone that was hungry and shared everything that she had. She always gave, through her heart and by her hands. It was her belief that if we want a better world, it starts with us.
