Shenandoah Area Secular Humanists (SASH)—a chapter of Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH)
Deadline: Submitted by email to sash@wash.org by March 24, 2024
1. ESSAY CONTEST PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
SPONSOR:
Shenandoah Area Secular Humanists (SASH)—a chapter of Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH)
PURPOSE:
To encourage graduating high school seniors to think about how they live their values.
NUMBER OF AWARDS:
Up to three to be awarded at the schools’ annual awards ceremonies…one top award of $1000 and two each in the amount of $500. The award will be a check made payable to each winner to be used any way the recipient wishes. SASH will not monitor the use of the award. If no applicants submit a quality essay, SASH will not issue any awards. Students submitting essays must have met all the graduation requirements to be eligible for an award.
2. ESSAY TOPIC BACKGROUND INFORMATION
While the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," it does not explicitly draw a separation of church and state. Last August, an Oklahoma school board approved what could be the first taxpayer-funded religious school in the U.S., and the Supreme Court might allow it on the basis of the above “free exercise” clause.
3. ESSAY TOPIC "What is your vision of the relationship between church and state in this country?"
4. ESSAY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
500 to 1000 words to be submitted by email to sash@wash.org by March 24, 2024. The student's name and high school must be included on the essay for it to be judged.
5. ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS:
SASH will inform Ms. Aimee Miller of Shenandoah County Public Schools of the names of the winners by April 15, 2024. At that time, SASH will consult with Ms. Miller to assure that the winners are still scheduled to graduate in 2024 and to make arrangements to have a SASH representative present the award(s) at the 2024 awards ceremonies.
6. ESSAY PERMISSION TO PUBLISH:
Although not required, SASH reserves the right to request permission from the winner and the winner’s parent(s) or guardian(s) to forward the winning essay to the local media for possible inclusion in their editorial section or to WASH and the American Humanist Association for their newsletters.
JUDGING:
Essays will be judged by a SASH judging committee, on the basis of command of language, quality of approach to the topic, and demonstrated critical thinking.
ELIGIBILITY:
Each applicant must be a graduating senior at a public high school in Warren County or Shenandoah County, Virginia. Although we want to encourage intellectual development of the winners of this essay contest, matriculation at an institution of higher learning is not required. This is not a needs-based award. The essay is the only required submission. SASH does not need nor want the family’s financial information or information on the student’s extracurricular activities or accomplishments.
