Connor Gweedo Memorial Foundation Scholarships

Requirements for submission:
A) Letters of Recommendation: Two (2) letters of recommendation must be submitted along with the completed application. At least one letter must be from a High school teacher or counselor and one from a community member. Letters must include the following:
Written within 3 months prior to the submission of your application.
The letters are signed and include contact information from the author
B) Transcripts: Please be sure to request your transcripts 2 to 4 weeks prior to the date you plan to submit your application.
You must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.00 to be eligible
Transcripts must be dated within 30 days prior to applying.

Since Conner’s death in 2019, the Foundation has worked closely with local Senators and members of the House of Delegates.
House Bill 1918 passed into law in 2021 and Senate Bill 78 passed into law in 2022 in the State of Virginia in Honor of Conner.
Conner’s Law (HB1918) requires each Virginia public high school to use a standardized form for any student who applies to obtain a parking pass AND to provide evidence that the student possesses a valid driver’s license. It also requires the VDOE to include instruction on the dangers of distracted driving and speeding in its Driver Education curriculum.
Senate Bill 78 requires an additional minimum 90-minute parent/student driver education component as part of the classroom portion of its driver education program and provides that participation shall be required in Planning District 8 (Northern Virginia) and shall be encouraged but shall not be required outside of Planning District 8
Normally we think of our cars as transportation, or a status symbol. Rarely do we think of our cars as what they really are. When you are behind the wheel of a car, you have incredible power at your fingertips. You also have the potential to inflict incredible injury and death to yourself and/or others.
Having already taken Driver’s Education in High School and completed the out of school driving requirements we feel you are best equipped to give feedback on how to affect change in the minds of teenagers. Driver’s education classes need to become relevant…they need to be as important, if not more important, than General Education requirements. Driving is the one thing you learn in High School, that no matter what, most people will use almost every day for the rest of their life.
Create a Distracted Driving post for use as a social media campaign, using Facebook, Instagram or Twitter; promoting safe driving and creating better driving habits in young drivers. Keep an emphasis on reckless driving, speeding, driving without a license, and how to speak up when you are a passenger in a vehicle being driven unsafely. Think about how social media influences us and how this post could be used to help deter factors that led to Conner’s unnecessary death. Submission must include a minimum of (2) different posts that incorporate graphics, live actors, reenactments, and/caricatures or clips.
Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
• Originality and creativity (Is it unique and creative?)
• Concept (Is the message and concept effective?)
• Clarity of message (Is the idea communicated clearly?)
Your post cannot contain nudity, violence, self-injury or profanity. Your post cannot include content intended to shock or disgust viewers, or content encouraging others to commit violent acts.
**Please do not post the actual campaign online; rather submit your renditions with your application.**
D) Scholarship Application: A completed scholarship application along with the above requirements must be submitted for consideration by May 15th.
