This project proposal is for a mobile makerspace that will form part of a wider initiative to support and promote maker education and makerspaces.
The mobile makerspace is a joint project involving the School of Education and the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (Faculty of Social Sciences), and the iForge (Faculty of Engineering), in collaboration with the Site Gallery.
Makerspaces are part of a rising global movement and encourage creative thinking, collaboration, exploration and physical and digital making. They are closely aligned with the teaching of STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art & maths) and often include DIY, crafts, electronics and digital fabrication. They come in all shapes and sizes, from a simple box filled with craft materials and tape, to a full workshop with the latest 3D printers and laser cutters. But makerspaces are more than a physical space filled with the latest tech, they serve as a platform to embed the ‘maker mindset’.
