Please contact pharmacy@sheffield.ac.uk with any offers of capacity for undergraduate placements. Our pharmacy officer can liaise regarding next steps to ensure a smooth placement process.
NHS organisations
Most NHS organisations will have an NHS Education Funding Agreement in place between their organisation and NHS England which outlines the responsibilities of NHS organisations in hosting undergraduate students.
Non-NHS organisations e.g. Community Pharmacies
An agreement will be drawn up adapted from the standard NHS placement agreement to fulfil the needs of the placement provider and University and sent to the organisation.
We ask that each placement site identifies a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician to be the named Educational Supervisor for undergraduate placements. To ensure we offer high quality education to students, we are asking the Educational Supervisor to have completed training. Please see "Placement Supervisor Training" tab for more information.
Prior to placements, students will:
1. Be issued with a Smartcard and Uniform
2. Have undertaken occupational health clearance
3. Have completed an enhanced DBS check
4. Have completed statutory mandatory training
Education Quality Framework review
As part of the clinical tariff payments through NHS England, placement providers are expected to review their organisation against the six domains of the NHS England Education Quality Framework to ensure quality of placement environments. This assessment is completed every 2 years (also known as a PARE audit). We will work with organisations to complete this review using an electronic self-reflection form and online discussion.
Please complete the form below if you or your organisation have not done so.
Please see the document outlining the process for clinical tariff payments
Allocation of students will be based on students' timetables, commute times from home addresses, and any Placement Adjustment Plans (PAPs) or exceptional circumstances. Placement providers will be sent a list of proposed allocations, with the dates, locations and numbers of students outlined. Once you are happy with these we notify students of their placement schedule. They have a window of opportunity to raise any significant issues (e.g. they have moved to a new area) before their placement allocations are confirmed.
We aim to have placement allocations confirmed at least six weeks in advance of the placement block start dates, along with any PAPs. Allocation details will consist of the student's name, University email address, and the dates and locations of their placements with you.
We use a system called InPlace to track placement offers, allocations, completions and feedback - however, as many of our providers do not use this system we will NOT be using it to notify you of your allocated students. This information will be sent to the main point of contact your organisation/department has provided. Our providers include NHS Trusts, GP practices and community pharmacy businesses of varying sizes, so our goal is to be as consistent as possible across provider types and student instructions.
Where students at the University of Sheffield have a Learning Support Plan, an offer is then made to the student to discuss the possibility of a Placement Adjustment Plan (PAP) in order to carry through any possible requirements into a placement setting.
When allocating students with a PAP to a placement, we send through the anonymised PAP to highlight any additional needs that a student has and support they may benefit from to the placement provider. The PAPs contain suggested reasonable adjustments that have been discussed and agreed with the student and a member of the clinical team; we would not anticipate that these could not on the whole be accommodated by the majority of our providers.
Where a placement provider feels they are unable to meet the recommended adjustments of a PAP for legitimate reasons, we would wish to discuss this with you to understand what barriers may exist that would mean you were unable to accept the student on placement. This will then enable us to look at the PAP's holistically and make improvements where possible in our student recommendations within adjustment plans for the future.
