Time Limits and Extensions
The University’s expectation is that projects should be undertaken that can be fully completed and submitted within a student’s funded period (normal period of registration). This includes the necessary training, preparatory work, actual research and writing of a thesis. This expectation should be clearly understood by students, supervisors and departments from the very beginning of your studies, so that your research is planned accordingly to ensure that you submit within your funded period.
Information about maximum and minimum periods of registration can be found on this page.
An extension to a student's maximum period of registration (i.e. their time limit for submission) will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. More information about extension requests, together with a downloadable extension request form, can be found in Research, Partnerships and Innovation Code of Practice.
Unless an extension is granted, a student’s candidature will automatically lapse if the thesis is not submitted before the time limit expires. Please note that extensions are granted by Faculty and not by the supervisor or Department, and that where such an extension is granted, a further fee is required.
