Progression and Resits
Re-sitting examinations and re-submitting assignments
In cases where a student fails to achieve a pass mark in a particular module, the regulations allow the candidate to resubmit assessed work on one further occasion to see if the pass mark can be achieved. The resubmitted coursework can only be given a maximum mark of bare pass (40 at Undergraduate level and 50 at Postgraduate Taught level). Any given piece of work may be re-submitted only once.
Students with fail results will need to register for resits, Student Administration Services release your overall results and provide information with those results on how to register to resit failed work and pay a resit fee (the fee will be capped at a maximum of three modules, even if there are more to resit).
For work that is deemed Not Assessed (NA), students will be automatically registered for the resit so that they can submit the work in the resit period as a first attempt for an uncapped mark. There will be no resit fee to pay where an NA result has been confirmed.
Resit assessments take place during the resit Examination Period over the summer and the submission date will be in August. The Learning and Teaching administrator for your programme will send instructions via email, so it is vitally important that you continue to monitor your university email account during the summer, particularly if you have resits to do.
Extensions are not normally granted. This is because we have to confirm and upload the results before registration for the next academic year begins, so as not to delay students' progression.
Resit assessments are made available on blackboard once final results are released, along with a new resit Turnitin link to submit work to.
Resit questions are often different to the first sit questions (the same topics but with a different slant) so it is important to check the assessment information.
There will be a fixed deadline in August for all resit assessments being submitted to Blackboard and this will be made clear on the module page and in communications.
Resit Examination dates are set by the Examinations Office and published around two weeks before the resit period begins. You are expected to check the Resit Examination Timetable and be in Sheffield to sit the Examination. International Students may be able to apply to resit a formal invigilated examination in their own country, however there will be an additional fee involved.
It will be your responsibility to ensure you engage with the process to register for your resit and submit your work by the published deadline. Where the assessment is exam based, you are responsible to ensure that you sit the examination at the appointed time.
Progression to the next level can only happen when core modules are successfully completed and a sufficient number of credits obtained.
The regulations may vary slightly by programme and by year, so please see the regulations on the award of degrees in the University Calendar
Student Administration Service
During your time as a student most of your daily contact with the university will be through staff in the Department of Sociological Studies and other academic departments. However, for certain administrative matters, you will need to deal directly with the Student Administration Service.
This central department in responsible for:
Processing and publishing examination results (including approving the decisions of boards of examiners, award of degrees and prizes, administration of Academic Appeals Procedures and transcripts of qualifications).
Student progress and progression (including implementation of Progress of Students Regulations and servicing of Appeals Committee of the Senate relating to the Progress of Students).
Administration of approval of student status changes (degree programme changes, leave of absence, withdrawals, transfers, etc., including update of individual student records).
Further information on progression, appeals and alternative courses of action such as taking a Leave of Absence is available from the University Calendar
