4 Creative Ways To Use Your Food Scraps

by Chloe Bradman, 25/03/2019

To use when bored, intrigued, want to have a bit of an edge, have an urge to help save the planet or all of the above.

1> House Plants

For those with green fingers – this may be the scrap hack for you…

Check out the video below by Goodful to see how you can turn your carrot heads, old garlic cloves and sweet potato sprouts into houseplants – yes, this actually is a thing.

Although some veggies seem more adventurous than others to transform, all of these are doable, will save the trip to IKEA, pennies, and those little bits of waste!

2> Herb Plants

Never buy a herb plant again by regrowing your old herb trimmings…

This video shows how you can do regrow basil, rosemary and coriander. They also use old tins to plant them in, too – a win win for zero waste!

3> Regrow Veg

The easiest vegetable to regrow is spring onion!

Simply put the leftover heads in water for a couple of weeks (changing the water regularly)

Here’s my little fella after 3 weeks…

4> Make Stock / Gravy

For making vegetable stock, it’s as easy as collecting your scraps in the freezer over time. When you’re ready to make stock, boil and simmer your bits with any herbs and/or garlic and strain. To get the ball rolling, here’s a simple recipe and here’s one that goes into more detail.

Gravy is a similar process with a couple of extra steps to thicken it up. This recipe puts it quite neatly.
