Kalpana Chawla (1962-2003) was mission specialist and robotic arm operator for the Space Shuttle Columbia. She was the first woman of Indian descent to go to space.
She grew up in Punjab and gained a Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College before achieving a Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas and a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder.
Her research in computational fluid dynamics at the NASA Ames Research Centre led to advances in the field of vertical and short take-off as landing concepts.
Her first flight in 1997 lasted 15 days and 12 hours. It was on this trip that she spoke the words "You are just your intelligence". Chawla unfortunately passed away, along with 6 other crew members, on her second mission in Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster in 2003. She is regarded as a national hero in India and numerous buildings, awards, and discoveries have been named after her.
