Languages

Year 7 Languages is made up of three modules - one each of French, Spanish and Te Reo Māori.

The course is designed to develop the students understanding of Māori Language and Tikanga, French language and culture, and Spanish language and culture.

Course Focus

French

• introduction to French - focus is on pronunciation and a basic understanding of simple sentence structures

• developing confidence in using everyday classroom French

• developing familiarity with commonly used vocabulary

• exploration of French culture through songs, structures in society and traditions.

• completing tasks towards earning St Hilda’s French badges.

Spanish

• introduction to Spanish - focus is on pronunciation and a basic understanding of simple sentence structures

• developing confidence in using everyday classroom Spanish

• developing familiarity with commonly used vocabulary

• exploration of Spanish culture through songs, structures in society and traditions.

• completing tasks towards earning St Hilda’s Spanish badges.

Te Reo Māori

• introduction to Te Reo Māori - focus is on pronunciation and a basic understanding of simple sentence structures

• developing confidence in using Te Reo Māori with others at the individual's level

• developing familiarity with commonly used vocabulary

• exploration of Te Ao Māori through karakia, waiata, haka, mihi and/or kōrero/stories
