Mrs. Cottone ELA Expectations

GRADING/EXPECTATIONS:

  • I grade on a points system. When you see graded work it will have the number of points a student earned over the total number of points possible.

  • Students should come prepared to class: assignment notebook, pens/pencils, notebook, folder, homework, and ready to learn.

  • Students are expected to participate in class discussions.

    • This is part of their grade.

  • Students should follow and read all directions given.

  • Absent work is to be turned in the next full day from an absence, unless otherwise noted by the teacher.

  • Students are responsible for coming to me when they are absent and finding out what they missed.

  • I do not give assignments to students early who may be leaving for a trip or other reason.

  • Students will have an "M" in FACTS letting you know the assignment is missing. It will calculate an "M" as a 0 and will alter the grade until the assignment is turned in. I will deduct 2 points from late work. Assignments should be turned in ASAP. I will not accept missing assignments after the end of a quarter. It will result in a 0 if assignments have not been turned in by end of quarter.

HOMEWORK:

  • Students will have a page of cursive homework Monday- Thursday.

  • Students will receive 2 points each day in their writing grade for homework and they will loose 1 point if homework is late or incomplete.

  • Students will be excused from cursive homework when they are absent.

  • All work must have a name on it or will result in deduction of points.

  • Students should be reading for 20 minutes an evening at home.

  • Students are expected to complete any classwork that they did not complete during class time each day.

DAILY FIX-IT:

  • Each student has a Daily Fix-it folder that stays at school and has weekly pages of sentences

  • Students will have 2 sentences each day to fix grammar and spelling errors

  • I will go over the corrections each day for these sentences

  • On Fridays, we will have a paragraph assessment that covers the grammar rules that we cover in our sentences each week

    • When students take these assessments each week, I will have written on the board the corrections that the students will be looking for and they can check their work

    • Example: 2 spelling corrections, 3 capitalize the beginning of sentence, 4 capitalize names and titles of stories

    • Students will have one chance to retake an assessment if they score a 75% or below and I will take the average of the two scores

  • These fix its will be apart of the students writing grade each week

    • They can earn up to 5 points a week just for completing these

    • Students will loose points if sentences are not complete each day

NOVEL STUDY:

  • We just started reading Because of Winn-Dixie.

  • Students will be keeping this book at school most days.

  • Every three chapters there will be a short assessment on those chapters.

  • There will be short reading comprehension questions that will be done in class every three chapters and will be taken for a grade.

CONDUCT:

  • Students will have a folder that they will carry from class to class.

  • In this folder will be a behavior sheet for teachers to comment on.

    • Comments will consist of: missing assignments, negative behavior, positive behavior. Students leaving the classroom, and missing items for a class.

  • Students will also put any assignments that need to be sent home in this folder as well.

  • Parents will need to check this daily and sign the sheet daily.

  • The behavior sheet will be collected on Monday and graded.

  • Grading will consist of the following:

    • - 1 point for missing items/assignments

    • -5 points for negative behavior

    • + 1 point for positive behavior

  • Total weekly points will be out of a 100.
